莫提默·J.艾德勒(Mortimer J.Adler，1902—2001)，生于纽约。他在芝加哥大学执教（1930－1952）时，于1946年帮助策划了“名著计划”，1952年起任哲学研究所所长。是西方世界伟大名著项目的发起人。主要作品有Art, the Arts, and the Great Ideas (1994)、Adler's Philosophical Dictionary: 125 Key Terms for the Philosopher's Lexicon (1995)等。
